2026 Annual UTokyo-NCCU-SNU Joint International Symposium
Call for Abstracts
“The 30th Anniversary of the Joint Symposium: The Frontline of Communication Research”
This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of our joint symposium. The inaugural symposium, held in 1996, explored the theme “The Frontline of Communication Research.” To commemorate three decades of collaboration and friendship among our institutions, and to reflect on the profound socio-political and technological transformations of the past thirty years, this year’s symposium revisits that original theme.
What counts as the “frontline” of communication research in an era shaped by platforms, artificial intelligence, data infrastructures, geopolitical tensions, and environmental crises? How have changing media environments, digital technologies, and socio-political conditions reshaped the questions, methods, and theoretical frameworks of the field over the last three decades? How have transformations in media and communication technologies changed social relations, cultural practices, political participation, and everyday life?
We welcome presentations from diverse disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives that examine the political, social, cultural, and ethical implications of new media, digital platforms, communication technologies, artificial intelligence, and other socio-technical transformations. We especially encourage contributions that reflect on how emerging technologies and social changes have transformed not only communication itself, but also the scholarly practices through which communication is studied, including shifts in research questions, methodologies, analytical frameworks, and critical concepts.
