Congratulations! Jun Ng's Words in the Wind Selected for the 33rd Women Make Waves International Film Festival
Jun Ng (Huang Shu-Chun), a graduate of the Master's Program in Communication at National Chengchi University, has been selected for the 33rd Women Make Waves International Film Festival with her graduation documentary, Words in the Wind.
Filmed over three years of fieldwork between Taiwan and northern Thailand, the 54-minute documentary explores the oral histories, migration experiences, and everyday lives of Yunnanese women living near the Thai–Myanmar border. Set in the Yunnanese village of Re Shui Tang in northern Thailand, the film brings together stories from different generations of women, from families connected to the Kuomintang’s 93rd Division to more recent migrants displaced by economic hardship and war.
The title Words in the Wind draws inspiration from the Yunnanese/Kokang expression “擺白話,” meaning casual conversation or chatting. Through seemingly ordinary conversations, the documentary reveals memories of migration, shifting identities, border conflicts, and displacement, offering an intimate perspective on histories often left untold.
Originally from Malaysia, Jun Ng is a documentary filmmaker whose work focuses on Southeast Asian history, culture, migration, and contemporary social issues. Her first documentary, Where the Heart Belongs, released in 2017, examined the Malayan Emergency during the British colonial period. In recent years, she has continued to explore migration, borders, identity, and women’s experiences through documentary filmmaking and research.
Congratulations to Jun Ng on this achievement! We look forward to seeing Words in the Wind reach more audiences through the festival.
